About Zachary's Chicago Pizza
Zachary’s Chicago Pizza, located at 5801 College Ave in Oakland, California, is a beloved family restaurant and pizza institution that has been serving the East Bay community since 1983. Founded by Zach Zachowski and Barbara Gabel, this employee-owned pizzeria has built a strong reputation for its signature Chicago-style stuffed pizzas and thin-crust pies, all made to order with a special tomato sauce that sets them apart. Over the decades, Zachary’s has become synonymous with quality, community, and a unique pizza experience that blends Chicago tradition with a California twist.
The story of Zachary’s Chicago Pizza begins with a passion for authentic Chicago-style pizza, which the founders brought to Oakland with the dream of creating a place where families and friends could gather to enjoy hearty, flavorful pies. The original location on College Avenue quickly became a neighborhood favorite, known for its thick, gooey stuffed pizzas that require a fork and knife, often described as “pizza stew” or “lasagna on crust.” This distinctive style, alongside their thin-crust options, offers something for every pizza lover, whether they prefer a rich, filling meal or a lighter, crispier slice.
In 2003, after two decades of dedicated service, Zach and Barbara passed the torch to their loyal staff, transitioning Zachary’s into a fully employee-owned business by 2010. This unique ownership model has fostered a strong sense of pride and commitment among the team, ensuring that every pizza is crafted with care and that the customer experience remains exceptional. Employee ownership has also helped maintain the family-oriented atmosphere that Zachary’s is known for, making it a welcoming place for both longtime patrons and newcomers.
Zachary’s Chicago Pizza has expanded thoughtfully over the years, now operating five locations across the East Bay, including multiple spots in Oakland, Berkeley, Pleasant Hill, and Pleasanton. Each location carries the same dedication to quality and community engagement, with a menu featuring classic combinations like Italian sausage, green pepper, onion, mushroom, and mozzarella, as well as creative options like spinach and mushroom with pesto. The pizzeria has earned over 225 “Best Pizza” awards, a testament to its consistent excellence and popularity.
Beyond the food, Zachary’s is deeply embedded in the local culture. The restaurant hosts an annual pizza art contest, started by co-founder Barbara Gabel in the 1980s, which has produced hundreds of unique pieces that decorate the walls of their restaurants, celebrating local artists and adding to the vibrant, family-friendly ambiance. This tradition reflects Zachary’s commitment to community involvement and creativity.
Zachary’s Chicago Pizza also offers convenient options for customers, including ready-to-go half-baked pizzas that can be finished at home, perfect for those who want to enjoy their favorite pies on their own schedule. The restaurant’s phone number, +1 510-655-6385, connects customers directly for orders and inquiries, ensuring personalized service.
With a rich history, a unique employee-owned structure, and a menu that honors both tradition and innovation, Zachary’s Chicago Pizza stands out as a cherished destination for pizza lovers in Oakland and beyond. Whether you are craving a thick, hearty stuffed pizza or a crisp thin crust, Zachary’s delivers a memorable dining experience rooted in quality, community, and decades of pizza passion.

We went on a Monday afternoon about 3:00 and it was practically empty, so we received ROYAL treatment. First time there, and it did not disappoint! Pizza was about 30 minutes, but I appreciated the heads up! Amazing! Also, please try the Dill Ranch if you order a salad. Wait staff was what it should be—friendly and happy to be serving their customers. Only bummer part….we don’t live here! We’ll be back for sure! LOVED IT!!

Finally tried this gem! Must try the stuffed mushroom and spinach. The crust and sauce are too good to be true! The chicken barbecue is also so good and I liked how it still had some marinara and went well with the sweetness of the barbecue sauce. 2 mediums was too much for 2 people but having this pizza for 3 days sounds lovely! Lovely place and staff!

I’ve visited Zachary’s Chicago Pizza a few times, and this time, my friend recommended the pesto pizza, which was absolutely delicious. The College Ave location definitely felt fresher compared to other spots I’ve been to. Our server was fantastic—super friendly with a big smile, which made our experience even better. However, the cashier wasn’t as pleasant. She was a bit rude and seemed to ignore us when we tried to ask if it was possible to modify our order. Despite that, we decided to order a bit more to take home, and the food was still great. Overall, we had a positive experience and would definitely return for the delicious pizza. Just a small note on the customer service, which could be improved.
